Luxembourg, commonly known as Luxembourg City (to distinguish it from the country) or simply d'Stad ('the City' in Luxembourgish), is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the biggest city in the country.
The city occupies an exceptional site. With its fortifications, it is located at the top of a rock of sandstone with steep banks, that round two rivers, the Alzette and the Petrusse. The old town is separated from the new south by the deep notch of the Pétrusse ravine which crosses bridges, such as the famous Adolphe bridge .
In the north, it is connected to the plateau of Kirchberg by the Grande-Duchesse Charlotte bridge which spans the Alzette. Three districts occupy the valleys: Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal.
The charm that emanates from Luxembourg City is due in particular to the harmonious cohabitation of the historical heritage with rather successful examples of contemporary architecture and by the presence of magnificent green spaces.
The numerous bridges, especially the Adolphe bridge and the Grand Duchess Charlotte bridge ('red bridge'), also contribute to give the city of Luxembourg its particular character.
